What is Experiential Learning?
Student application of theory, skills, techniques, and/or practices in a context that focuses on applications outside the traditional classroom but may also stem from a course assignment or project.
What are some examples of Experiential Learning?
Community-based service learning projects, Field Experiences, Student Teaching, Clinical Placement, Study Abroad, Capstone Experiences, and leadership roles in student organizations are examples of activities associated with Experiential Learning. Each experience includes intentional reflections completed at specific points in time relative to elements associated with each activity using prompts provided by the Experiential Learning Cycle framework (Kolb, 1984). When should students complete experiential learning activities?
Students may complete Experiential Learning activities at any point during their studies at VSU. We are actively encouraging students to begin such activities in their first year to help prime them for larger, more complex activities in their upper-level courses.
Who should I contact for questions regarding courses and programs that are considered Experiential Learning activities?
Please visit blog.valdosta.edu/QEP to learn more about new course offerings and opportunities (available by the start of the Fall 2021 semester). Banner will also begin to feature course designations for Experiential Learning as more courses are pre-certified each year.
What if a student states that they completed an Experiential Learning activity at my previous institution?
Valdosta State University cannot retroactively provide credit for Experiential Learning activities completed at previous institutions as of this time.
